Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI)

This course is designed for individuals who wish to teach top rope climbing and bouldering on indoor climbing walls and artificial towers. It focuses on the safe management of groups and the coaching of movement skills. A second module covers group abseiling.

To start the qualification, you must first book onto a Climbing Wall Instructor Training. In order to do this, make sure you meet the following criteria:

  • You be over 17 years old
  • You must be registered on the scheme – you can do so here.
  • You must have an understanding of the wider sport of climbing.
  • You must have an up to date log-book (preferably DLOG) with evidence of the following: Visits to 3 different climbing walls on at least 15 different occasions; this must include at least one major public wall.
    10 led routes at Fr4 on walls.
