Try climbing
The only workout where you forget you’re working out.
Climbing is full-body movement that feels like play. This is everything you need to know to start indoor climbing with TCA — where to go, what to expect, and how to book your first session. You solve puzzles with your body, build grip and core strength without noticing, and leave grinning instead of grimacing. No reps. No counting. Just you, the wall and the ridiculous joy of figuring it out.
We’re The Climbing Academy (TCA) with two centres in Glasgow – The Newsroom (Kinning Park) and The Prop Store (Maryhill) – open 7 days a week.
Ready to start?
Book a Bouldering Induction at The Newsroom
A relaxed 30-minute walk-through with one of our instructors who will explain everything you need to know. £15 including shoe hire — then you can stay and climb as long as you like.

Three ways to start
1. Just turn up and boulder
Bouldering is climbing without ropes, over thick padded mats. No booking, no course, no experience needed. Hire shoes at reception, watch a short safety video, and you’re on the wall. Over-16s can boulder unsupervised; under-16s come with a registered adult.
2. Book a Bouldering Induction
A relaxed 30-minute walk-through with one of our instructors. They’ll show you how it all works, give you a few moves to try, and set you up to keep climbing on your own afterwards. The friendly way in if “just turn up” feels too much. More info.
3. Free Auto Belay Induction
Want to climb the tall stuff without a partner? Auto belays are clever machines that take in the rope as you climb and lower you gently when you let go. Our induction is free, takes about 15 minutes, and unlocks the full height of the wall for every visit afterwards. Available on request at The Prop Store in Maryhill.
Want to climb on real ropes with a partner belaying you? Book a Roped Beginners' course or come along with an experienced climber who can supervise.
Your 2nd climb is free
Pay for your first visit and your second visit is on us. No catch, no small print — just our way of saying “come back”. Valid for new TCA climbers, at any of our centres. The perfect way to try both Glasgow centres for no extra cost.
Buy a TCA Gift Card
The present that actually gets used. A TCA Gift Card works for climbing entry, courses, café and shop, across all TCA centres.
Quick answers
- Do I need to be fit or strong to try climbing? No. Bouldering is for everyone — kids, grandparents, gym-avoiders and gym-lovers. You’ll build the strength as you climb. Most TCA regulars couldn’t do a pull-up when they started.
- What should I wear? Comfortable activewear and warm layers — our centres are big warehouse spaces and can feel chilly when you arrive. You’ll warm up fast once you’re climbing. We hire climbing shoes at reception.
- Do I need to book? For bouldering, no — just turn up. For inductions, courses, tasters and kids’ classes, yes. Save time on your first visit: complete the registration form online before you arrive.
- How long can I climb for? As long as you like. Once you’ve paid in, there’s no time limit at any TCA centre — stay for an hour or stay until close.
- What’s the difference between bouldering and roped climbing? Bouldering is short, ropeless climbing over soft mats — social, easy to start, no partner needed. Roped climbing goes higher, uses a harness and rope, and either needs a partner (who can belay) or try our auto belays. Most people start with bouldering.
- Can I bring kids? Yes. We run instructed classes for kids and teens at every centre, with the first class free for new young climbers. The Newsroom has a dedicated kids’ climbing area. Find youth sessions near you. For drop-in climbing, each adult can supervise up to 2 under 16s.
- Are your cafés open to the public? Yes. You don’t need to climb to use them. Pop in for a coffee, a sweet treat or a savoury snack — all centres serve great savoury options, sweet treats and drink, 7 days a week.
- How much does it cost? For drop-in climbing, you can pay-as-you-go from your first visit (with the second free for new climbers). Adults off peak £12.50 / peak £14.50. Hire shoes are extra. Monthly passes and punch cards work out cheaper if you’re coming regularly. See our Prices page for the current rates.
