Women’s Climbing Club – Glasgow
TCA Glasgow's Women's Climbing Club is a monthly event with lectures from inspirational women, all female coaching, film screenings, chats and nibbles! We support and encourage female climbers of any age and ability within the centre and promote wider participation, with the help of local female climbers and staff which runs on the last Wednesday of every month.
TCA Glasgow's next Women's Climbing Club meet is on, Wednesday 7th June at 6.30pm.
Olivia Mason will be the next guest speaker for the Club. Olivia has spent the past year climbing and hiking in Jordan. She has been there as part of her PhD research has been about exploring the growth of hiking and climbing as tourism practices in the Middle East and in particular, Jordan. Since the 1980s Wadi Rum has been an important climbing destination in the Middle East with its large sandstone walls attracting trad climbers.
Olivia's talk for the Women's Climbing Club will include the history of Jordan as a rock climbing destination and how Western and Bedouin culture intersect on the wall. The increase in hiking in Jordan in recent years with tourists, ex-pats and locals discovering what it means to hike in the beautiful and diverse landscapes within Jordan.
She will also talk about the Jordan Trail, a new long distance hiking trail running from the north to south of the whole country, a total of 650km. Sharing her experiences of walking the whole trail as a woman in the Middle East; and the role the Jordan Trail plays in connecting communities and translating a different history and picture of the region through the encounters with it by foot.
After our talk there will be a chance to ask Olivia questions, followed by a short film screening.
The second part of our event will focus on climbing; there will be an opportunity to sign up with any of our four instructors to learn new techniques, hone footwork, train and try hard problems. If you are new to climbing or a seasoned pro this event will have something for everyone, and probably some cake too!
