yeah, i agree. if you had an annual 'once over' that would certainly set you apart (and above) other smelly climbing centres (no names mentioned) ;-)

Many thanks for your comments. We also like climbing and working in a clean environment and this is our floor cleaning schedule:
Mats - hoovered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Deep cleaned every few months (washed down). We have now ordered carpet that will cover the entire matted area, and this will be fitted in the new year.
Carpet beside the lockers - hoovered daily - shampooed every 3 months to remove staining.
Cafe area - cleaned daily.
Reception area - hoovered and washed at the duty managers discretion (dependent on traffic, dampness etc). Deep cleaned (professionally buffed) every 3 months.
Toilets, toilet hallway and showers. Washed daily. Deep cleaned (professionally buffed) every 3 months.
We've settled into this schedule over the past 12 months feel that this works well, but If there is anything further you feel we should be doing then please don't hesitate to discuss it with us.
Happy climbing from us all at TCA.

I am suprised about the original post. Do you have any idea what the centre would look like if it hadn't been cleaned since it opened?! This is by far the cleanest facility I have ever visited. Climbing produces massive amounts of dirt and dust and to keep the centre as clean as it so obviously is is a grear achievement. Keep up the good work

TCA is by far the cleanest climbing wall i've ever been to! holds, mats and everywhere else. thanks to all the staff for keeping it this way.

I'm a little worried about covering the matting in carpet. If it is similar to the way it has been done in the UCR it means the impact when falling is harder and less forgiving, and the material is not comfortable to bare skin. It also feels more likely to go over/twist an ankle if falling unexpectedly as the feet 'catch' on the carpet. Please don't go this route!

I'm appreciating the cleanliness in general though, as well as the friendliness, and all round awesomeness - keep it up!

Hi Matt, we are having the same style of carpet that is fitted to both The Works in Sheffield, and The Castle in London. As well as keeping falling climbers cleaner, the carpet, as you have mentioned, will cause a small increase in firmness. Due to the constant compression of impact, our mats are much softer now than when we first opened, and the carpet will considerably extend their lifespan.

This IS by far the best climbing centre around! it outshines others with a constant high quality both in the wall and staff!!

THANKS TCA

There's a thread on UKC about the whole carpeting debate:

heh yeah I started it ;)

It has alleviated some of my concerns - especially hearing that its well received at the works. I'm sure it will be installed sympathetically, look forward to trying it out and hopefully changing my attitude towards the dreaded stuff!

Thanks Matt, that's good to hear. All being well, we should be having it fitted at the end of the month so you'll be able make your mind up about it then.
